The Seiko 5 Sports HDB003 is the largest production run in the Edo purple anniversary group and the most familiar watch beneath the colour. It uses the 42.5 mm SKX-series case, calibre 4R36 and a three-row bracelet, with production limited to 9,999 pieces.
In other words, Seiko has not reinvented the affordable automatic sports watch. It has made the existing one purple, added gold-coloured details and numbered the case back. The useful question is whether the base watch still makes sense.
HDB003 is the straightforward entry point to the Edo purple collection. It offers an automatic day-date movement and 10-bar water resistance, but keeps the usual curved Hardlex and 41-hour power reserve.

Familiar SKX-series proportions
The stainless-steel case is 42.5 mm across, 13.9 mm thick and 46.0 mm lug to lug. That short lug-to-lug figure is why this case often wears better than its diameter suggests. The 22 mm bracelet uses a three-fold clasp with secure lock and push-button release.
The dial, bezel and accents carry the Edo purple theme. Gold-coloured Seiko 5 lettering provides the anniversary contrast. LumiBrite is applied to the hands and indexes, and the bezel rotates in one direction.
Calibre 4R36: known quantity
Inside is calibre 4R36, an automatic movement with manual winding, hacking seconds and day-date display. Power reserve is approximately 41 hours. It is not technically ambitious, but it is widely understood, serviceable and appropriate to the Seiko 5 position in the range.
Water resistance is 10 bar. The crystal is curved Hardlex, not sapphire. The case back is transparent and carries the limited-edition marking. Seiko plans 9,999 pieces, which makes this limited in the literal sense and fairly obtainable in the practical one.

Who should buy it?
HDB003 makes sense for someone who wants the purple anniversary look without moving into 6R55, GPS Solar or mechanical GMT pricing. The short lug span should help medium wrists, though the 13.9 mm thickness and 42.5 mm bezel still give it presence.
Skip it if sapphire is non-negotiable or if you already own several SKX-series Seiko 5 models and wanted a meaningful mechanical change. The new colour is strong; the specification is deliberately ordinary.
Verdict
This is likely to be the volume seller of the collection because it combines the most accessible platform with the largest allocation. It is also the easiest one to understand. You are buying an SKX-series Seiko 5 Sports in a very uncommon Seiko colour, not a new watch disguised by anniversary language.
