Seiko HHK001 vs HHK002: The Panda Chronographs Go Literal

The Seiko HHK001 and HHK002 are deliberately literal panda chronographs: HHK001 is black and white, while HHK002 is pink like a newborn panda. Both use the same chunky 43mm case and 8T61 quartz movement, so this is a colour decision rather than a specification contest.

Seiko lists both for November 2026 at USD 540 in the US. UAE pricing and allocation have not been confirmed, and WristBear does not have verified stock. This is a manufacturer-source release comparison, not a hands-on review.

The joke runs through the whole watch

The drooping subdials form the panda’s eyes, the hands resemble bamboo leaves and the recessed round pushers become ears. Seiko even renames the tachymeter as the SASAMETER, a reference to sasa bamboo leaves, and scales it to a stated panda top speed of 30 km/h.

The case back continues the idea with a three-dimensional tail and a panda-back pattern. Each colour also receives a different presentation box: green grass imagery for HHK001 and a fluffy pink interior for HHK002.

What changed

  • The panda-dial nickname becomes a literal panda face.
  • Round recessed pushers stand in for ears, while the subdials form the eyes.
  • The usual tachymeter is renamed SASAMETER and calibrated around a panda’s stated top speed.

What stayed the same

  • Both references use the same 43mm steel case and 8T61 quartz chronograph.
  • Both use Hardlex, cow-leather straps and splash-resistant cases.
  • The only practical specification split is colour and edition size.

A compact lug-to-lug does not make this a small watch

The stainless-steel case is 43.0mm wide and 14.6mm thick, but only 44.1mm lug to lug. That short footprint may help it sit more neatly than the diameter suggests, though the height and literal face will still make it visually loud.

Hardlex covers the dial, the strap is cow leather and water resistance is only splash resistant on the product pages, with the press release stating 3 bar. This is not the playful chronograph to choose for swimming.

8T61 is simple, accurate and battery powered

Calibre 8T61 is a quartz movement with a stated accuracy of ±15 seconds per month in the specified temperature range. It runs the central 1/5-second chronograph hand, can time up to 60 minutes and uses a separate small-seconds display.

Seiko states approximately three years of battery life. That is less romantic than a mechanical chronograph, but it fits the brief: the design remains the point, while the movement keeps ownership straightforward.

The practical split HHK001 is the readable, recognisably panda choice. HHK002 is the stranger one and the smaller edition. Everything mechanical and dimensional is shared.

Price and UAE availability

Both official US product pages list USD 540. Using the dated USD/AED rate retrieved for this release, that is about AED 1,983.15. This is an indicative conversion, not official UAE retail, landed cost or a discount.

Seiko says the watches will reach boutiques and selected retailers worldwide from November 2026. HHK001 is limited to 3,000 pieces and HHK002 to 2,000. UAE allocation and WristBear stock remain unconfirmed.

Verdict: HHK001 is easier, HHK002 is weirder

Choose HHK001 if you want the joke to read instantly as a panda dial. Choose HHK002 if the pink newborn-panda idea is the appeal and you prefer the smaller production run. Neither changes the practical equation: both are large, thick, splash-resistant quartz chronographs built around one very committed visual gag.
