The Seiko Rotocall HFL001 is the odd one in the 145th-anniversary collection, which is precisely why it is interesting. It revives a 1982 digital design whose eight-sided rotating bezel changes operating modes. For the Edo purple edition, Seiko pairs a black case and bracelet with a purple aluminium selector and gold-coloured accents.
Most digital watches ask you to remember which button does what. Rotocall lets you turn the bezel toward the function printed around it. Forty-four years later, that still feels more considered than several smartwatch menus.

What “Rotocall” actually means
The original Rotocall appeared in 1982. Its rotary switch simplified mode selection and became associated with astronauts, partly because a large rotating control is easier to operate than a sequence of small buttons. Seiko’s modern version retains that interface rather than merely borrowing the old case shape.
The bezel is marked with each function. Rotate it, and calibre A824 changes the display accordingly. The concept is simple enough that it barely needs nostalgia to justify itself.
A824 digital functions
Calibre A824 is rated to ±20 seconds per month with an estimated battery life of three years. It includes a chronograph capable of timing up to 100 hours in 1/100-second increments, a single alarm, a countdown timer up to 100 minutes, dual time and a full automatic calendar through 31 December 2074.
There is also an LED backlight, battery-life warning and counter function. This is a feature-rich digital watch, but its appeal is the way those features are accessed rather than the length of the list.
Case and anniversary treatment
The stainless-steel case measures 37.0 mm across, 10.6 mm thick and 43.5 mm lug to lug. It receives a hard black coating and is paired with a matching bracelet. The aluminium bezel carries the Edo purple colour, while gold-tone details appear around the display and clasp.
Hardlex covers the display. Water resistance is 10 bar, and the screw-down case back is marked LIMITED EDITION. Production is capped at 4,000 pieces.

Who is this for?
HFL001 is not the bargain choice merely because it is digital. It is the design-led choice for someone who wants an unusual interface and a direct link to Seiko’s early-1980s digital catalogue. The 37 mm size also makes it the most compact men’s-design reference in the global group.
If you mainly want an inexpensive alarm and timer, many watches will do more for less. If you want a Seiko whose bezel actually controls the software, the list becomes rather shorter.
