Seiko 5 Sports x Honda Motocompo HDB010: The 36.4mm Trunk-Bike Tribute

Seiko has turned one of Honda’s strangest good ideas into a watch. The Seiko 5 Sports HDB010 is based on the Motocompo, a 49cc folding scooter launched in 1981 to fit inside the boot of the original Honda City.

The result is a compact 36.4mm automatic field watch with a loud yellow dial, black-coated case and enough scooter-specific details to make the collaboration feel designed rather than merely licensed. It is limited to 8,000 pieces worldwide and is due in September 2026.

Why the Honda Motocompo still makes sense as a watch collaboration

Honda launched the Motocompo alongside the first-generation City in November 1981. Its handlebars and footrests folded into its rectangular body so the whole scooter could be secured in the car’s luggage area. Honda called the combination a “six-wheel lifestyle”: four wheels for the longer trip, two for the last stretch.

The numbers remain entertaining. The Motocompo had a 49cc air-cooled two-stroke engine producing 2.5 horsepower, while the scooter itself weighed 42kg dry. It was compact engineering with a clear purpose, even if lifting a 42kg scooter into a hatchback was not quite the frictionless urban future the brochure suggested.

That mix of practicality, oddness and strong industrial design explains why the Motocompo still has a following. More importantly for this watch, it gives Seiko far more material to work with than a logo and a new dial colour.

The HDB010 borrows details, not just branding

The yellow dial is the obvious reference. A black stripe runs across its centre with the Honda wordmark at 9 o’clock, echoing the graphics on the scooter’s body. The “AUTOMATIC” text at 6 uses lettering inspired by the Motocompo logo. Even the small red accent near 8 o’clock fits the scooter’s graphic language.

Seiko also marked the crown with “TURN”, a reference to the Motocompo’s fuel tap. The nylon strap carries “CARRYING POINT” on its hardware and “INSERTION POINT” at the tip, borrowing the language used around the scooter’s tie-down system.

Those are unusually specific references. None makes the watch mechanically different, but together they prevent the usual collaboration problem where the partner logo does most of the work.

A genuinely compact Seiko 5 Sports case

The HDB010 uses Seiko’s compact Field-series format: 36.4mm across, 12.5mm thick and 44.4mm lug to lug. The stainless-steel case receives a black hard coating and sits on an 18mm nylon strap. At 65g, it should wear light as well as small.

This size matters. Plenty of collaborations use the artwork of a compact object and then put it into a 42mm case. Seiko has resisted that particular bit of comedy here. The proportions actually support the Motocompo idea and should suit smaller wrists particularly well.

A curved Hardlex crystal covers the dial, LumiBrite is applied to the hands and hour markers, and water resistance is rated to 10 bar. It is still a Seiko 5 Sports rather than a professional dive watch, but the everyday specification is sensible.

The familiar 4R36 is the correct movement here

Inside is Seiko’s calibre 4R36, an automatic movement with manual winding, hacking seconds, day and date, 24 jewels and roughly 41 hours of power reserve. It is familiar rather than exotic, which is fine at this level. Parts availability and widespread servicing matter more in a daily-wear collaboration than a decorative movement upgrade that doubles the price.

The day-date window at 3 o’clock also suits the field-watch layout. It adds useful information without fighting the large Arabic numerals or the black Honda stripe.

The case back and box finish the idea properly

The exhibition case back has red Motocompo artwork, “Limited Edition” text and an individual serial number. The nylon strap normally sits over it, so the design is not constantly on show. That is probably for the best. The front remains the cleaner part of the watch, while the full collaboration treatment waits underneath.

The packaging is more committed. Seiko supplies the HDB010 in a special carton styled after the Motocompo’s original shipping box, including Honda graphics and an illustration of the scooter. Limited-edition packaging often means a larger black box and some foil. This one at least belongs to the subject.

Price and UAE availability

The HDB010 is scheduled for release in September 2026. Seiko’s Japanese listing prices the HDB010J at ¥52,800 including tax and allocates 1,200 of the global 8,000-piece run to Japan. Seiko has not yet confirmed official UAE pricing or a Gulf allocation.

Wristbear does not currently list the HDB010, so there is no honest local stock claim to make yet. If the model reaches the UAE, the 8,000-piece production figure is large enough that buying one should not require theatrical panic, but the more distinctive Seiko collaborations do tend to move faster than routine catalogue releases.

Is the Seiko HDB010 worth watching?

Yes, if the size and source material appeal to you. The 36.4mm case is the strongest practical decision here, while the marked crown, strap hardware, case back and carton show that Seiko did more than recolour an existing model.

The trade-offs are standard Seiko 5 Sports fare: Hardlex instead of sapphire and a 41-hour movement rather than one of Seiko’s newer long-reserve calibres. Neither is surprising. What you are getting is a compact mechanical watch with a coherent design, useful everyday water resistance and a collaboration story weird enough to justify its own existence.
