Watch Care and Servicing in the UAE

Watch Care & Servicing in the UAE

Owning a quality timepiece in the UAE comes with a specific set of considerations. Between desert heat, coastal humidity, and saltwater exposure, the Gulf environment is one of the more demanding climates for mechanical and quartz watches alike. This guide addresses the questions our customers ask most — and sets honest expectations about care, servicing, and your warranty.

How the UAE Climate Affects Your Watch

Heat

Sustained temperatures above 60°C — common inside parked vehicles or on direct sun-facing surfaces — can degrade rubber gaskets, cause lubricants inside mechanical movements to thin or evaporate, and damage LCD displays on digital watches. Avoid leaving your watch in direct sunlight or inside a closed car. When not in use, store it in a cool, dry environment away from windows.

Humidity and Condensation

Coastal areas in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and the Northern Emirates see high ambient humidity, particularly between June and September. Even water-resistant watches are not immune to condensation: sudden transitions between air-conditioned interiors and humid outdoor air can cause micro-droplets to form inside the case if gaskets are worn. If you notice fogging under the crystal, treat this as urgent — moisture inside the case causes rapid corrosion of the movement.

Saltwater and Sand

Salt accelerates oxidation on metal components and degrades rubber and silicone seals faster than freshwater. If your watch has been exposed to seawater, rinse it with clean fresh water and dry it thoroughly — even if it is rated for diving. Sand and fine dust are equally problematic: they work into crown threads and pushers, wearing down seals over time. After beach or desert outings, wipe the case and bracelet with a soft, slightly damp cloth.

Automatic Watches: What to Expect

Automatic (self-winding) movements are mechanical instruments. They require periodic servicing to maintain accuracy and protect internal components. As a general guide:

  • Full service interval: Every 3–5 years, depending on the brand, movement complexity, and how frequently the watch is worn.
  • Water-resistance re-testing: Annually if the watch is regularly submerged, or whenever the crown, pushers, or gaskets are replaced.
  • Power reserve check: If a worn automatic is suddenly running fast, slow, or stopping unexpectedly, the movement likely needs lubrication or regulation — not just a wind.

In the UAE's heat, service intervals may be shorter than manufacturer recommendations. If your watch is worn daily in outdoor conditions, err on the side of earlier servicing.

Quartz Watches: What to Expect

Quartz movements are lower-maintenance, but not maintenance-free:

  • Battery replacement: Most quartz watches require a new battery every 1–3 years. Always have batteries replaced by a qualified watchmaker — improper replacement can dislodge gaskets and void water resistance.
  • Full service: Every 5–7 years, or whenever accuracy degrades noticeably. The movement may need cleaning and re-lubrication even without a battery change.
  • Solar and kinetic quartz: These avoid routine battery changes but benefit from periodic capacitor checks and movement cleaning on the same 5–7 year schedule.

Daily Care Habits

  • Wipe the case and bracelet with a microfibre cloth after each wear, especially in humid or coastal conditions.
  • Crown should always be pushed in or screwed down before any water exposure.
  • Avoid contact with perfumes, colognes, and chemical solvents — these degrade gaskets and finish lacquer.
  • Store the watch in its box or a watch roll when not in use, away from magnetic fields (speakers, phone chargers, laptop hinges).
  • For automatic watches worn irregularly, a watch winder set to the correct turns-per-day (TPD) for your movement keeps the mainspring tensioned and lubricants distributed.

Wristbear's Warranty: What It Covers

Every watch sold by Wristbear is covered by the manufacturer's international or regional warranty. The scope and duration of coverage varies by brand. As a general framework:

  • Manufacturing defects: Covered. This includes movement defects, finishing faults, and component failures under normal use.
  • Wear and accidental damage: Not covered. This includes scratches, impact damage, crown breakage from misuse, and water ingress resulting from a worn or missing gasket.
  • Unauthorised service: Opening the case or having the movement serviced by a non-authorised watchmaker will typically void the manufacturer's warranty.

When you purchase through Wristbear, we provide you with the manufacturer's warranty documentation. For warranty claims, we act as the point of contact to facilitate the process with the brand or their authorised UAE service centre — we do not carry out repairs in-house.

Finding a Trusted Service Centre in the UAE

For warranty work, always use the brand's authorised service network. Most major watch manufacturers — including Seiko, Orient, Tissot, and others — maintain authorised service centres or appointed agents in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Authorised centres use genuine parts and trained technicians, and their work preserves your warranty.

For out-of-warranty servicing on non-luxury pieces, a qualified independent watchmaker with verifiable experience on your movement calibre is a practical option. Ask for a written estimate before authorising any work, confirm they will use compatible parts, and request documentation of the work performed.

If you are unsure which service centre is appropriate for your watch, contact us and we will point you in the right direction.
